The Wedding Story
The Vision: European Estate Grandeur Without Segmented Dining
When Alex and Connor began planning their June wedding, they fell in love with the classical symmetry and European charm of historic estate architecture—but refused the awkward spatial compromises common across Virginia manors. Their non-negotiable priority was finding a setting where all 160 guests could experience an unhurried, all-day celebration without feeling shuttled between disjointed locations or split across small dining parlors.
With 120 private acres reserved 100% exclusively for their celebration, Great Marsh gave them an uninterrupted 14-hour timeline from their 8:00 AM suite arrivals through their 11:00 PM live-band finale.
“We wanted the romance of a private estate, but we refused to separate our guests into small rooms or sacrifice the energy of a huge live band. Seeing all 160 of our guests dining together, packing the dance floor, and cheering around our champagne tower proved we made the best decision possible.”
— Alex Cundiff
A Calm, Non-Crossing Morning in the Manor
The celebration began at 8:00 AM on separate levels of the Georgian Manor House:
- The Second-Floor Bridal Salon: Natural morning light poured through full-length windows as The Veil Hair and Makeup Co. styled Alex, her bridesmaids, and mothers. The bridal party spent a leisurely morning in matching loungewear with mimosas, breakfast, and panoramic views across the manicured lawns.
- The Ground-Floor Groom’s Lounge: Connor and his groomsmen arrived at 10:45 AM, settling in by the stone hearth and slate billiards table before dressing in classic black tuxedos accented with peach boutonnieres.
- Complete Morning Privacy: Because both suites occupy separate floors with independent exterior exits, the couple spent their entire morning on-site with zero risk of an accidental pre-ceremony crossing.
Courtyard Vows & An Honorary Ring Bearer
At 4:30 PM, 160 guests gathered on the stone terrace of the South Courtyard. Framed by the estate’s neoclassical stone balustrades and the rolling Piedmont foothills, the ceremony blended timeless architectural elegance with joyful personal touches.
In an unforgettable entrance, the couple’s beloved dachshund trotted down the aisle as honorary ring bearer, sporting a custom miniature tuxedo and ring pillow to the delight of guests. Beneath the Virginia summer sun, Alex and Connor exchanged personal vows and shared their first kiss as husband and wife to joyous applause.
Veranda Cocktail Hour & Carriage Lane Portraits
Following the ceremony, guests transitioned down to the Historic Stables and adjoining lawns for an indoor-outdoor cocktail hour. Friends and family gathered around the outdoor stone firepit and Adirondack seating beneath ambient string lights, enjoying chilled wine, craft cocktails, and butler-passed hors d’oeuvres by Serendipity Catering.
Meanwhile, photographer Nikki Daskalakis guided the couple through golden-hour portraits across the grounds: joyful strolls along the Georgian Manor facade, dramatic portrait sweeps up the stone portico staircase with Alex’s cathedral veil catching the breeze, and quiet sunset moments down the tree-lined carriage drive. At 5:30 PM, Alex and Connor joined their guests on the lawn for pre-dinner toasts.
Unified Dining & A 9-Piece Live Band in the Stables
At 6:20 PM, EastCoast Entertainment’s 9-piece live band, Gentleman and Their Lady, kicked off their opening set. Guests filed into the climate-controlled Historic Stables, greeted by handcrafted wooden farmhouse tables and round guest tables styled with Tuscan cross-back chairs, French blue-and-white accents, and warm candlelight.
At 6:30 PM, Alex and Connor made their grand entrance through the rustic timber barn doors straight into their first dance to Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You.” Emotional parental dances followed immediately: Alex shared a dance with her father to Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me”, and Connor danced with his mother to the Backstreet Boys’ “The Perfect Fan.”
Farm-to-Table Plating by Serendipity Catering
Because Great Marsh features a permanent on-site commercial kitchen directly behind the Stables, dinner was prepared fresh by Serendipity Catering with zero portable kitchen tents, diesel generators, or lukewarm transport boxes:
- Plated Bread & Salad Course: Freshly baked artisan breads with whipped butter, followed by a seasonal summer greens salad.
- Turnkey Entrée Service: A farm-to-table culinary progression highlighting locally sourced Virginia proteins, fresh summer vegetables, and chef-curated accompaniments plated à la minute.
- Celebratory Toasts: Following dinner, champagne was poured as heartfelt and humorous speeches were delivered by the Maid of Honor, Best Man, and Father of the Bride.
The Crystal Champagne Tower & Live Soul Finale
At 7:45 PM, Alex slipped away to the Manor for a quick wardrobe change into a chic reception party dress.
At 7:50 PM, the celebration reached an electric visual high point: the couple gathered around a multi-tier crystal coupe tower arranged on a French blue-and-white toile table. To the beat of Trey Songz’s “Bottoms Up”, Alex and Connor popped bottles and poured golden champagne cascading through the crystal tiers, raising an unforgettable toast with all 160 guests.
At 7:55 PM, the dance floor officially opened. With Gentleman and Their Lady delivering continuous live soul, funk, and modern hits, the Stables remained packed all evening before guests boarded Chariots for Hire shuttles back to Fredericksburg at 11:00 PM.
