The Wedding Story
The Vision: Architectural Grandeur Without Shared Grounds
When Lian Wang and Hun Ki began planning their autumn wedding, they wanted the classical gravitas of Virginia’s countryside paired with an intimate, modern atmosphere. Having visited venues where multiple events run simultaneously or where historic mansion layouts split guests across small rooms, Lian and Hun Ki set a clear priority: total, uninterrupted privacy across the entire property, and one unified room where all 107 guests could celebrate together.
Great Marsh Estate granted them full 14-hour exclusivity across 120 private acres—allowing their day to unfold at a natural, unhurried pace from morning styling to their sparkler send-off.
“We didn’t want our guests walking through someone else’s cocktail hour or eating dinner in a separate parlor room. Having all 120 acres to ourselves meant everyone stayed connected from our courtyard vows to the late-night dance floor.”
— Lian Wang
A Calm, Non-Crossing Morning in the Manor
The celebration began at 8:00 AM on separate levels of the Georgian Manor House:
- The Second-Floor Bridal Salon: Flooded with crisp October morning sunlight, the bridal wing gave Lian, her bridal party, and mothers a relaxed setting for hair, makeup, breakfast, and mimosas. Lian wore a couture gown accented with hand-rolled rosettes, carrying a modern bouquet of calla lilies and tulips featuring a photo pendant honoring family members.
- The Ground-Floor Groom’s Lounge: Downstairs, Hun Ki and his groomsmen dressed in classic black tuxedos, enjoying a relaxed morning by the stone fireplace and slate billiards table.
- Complete Morning Privacy: Because both suites feature private levels and independent exterior doors, the couple spent the entire morning on-site with zero risk of an accidental pre-ceremony crossing.
The South Courtyard Ceremony Beneath October Foliage
At 4:30 PM, 107 guests took their seats on the South Courtyard terrace. Framed by the estate’s stone balustrades, manicured boxwoods, and the amber foliage of the Piedmont foothills, the setting paired clean architectural lines with autumn warmth.
Guests were welcomed upon arrival with pre-chilled prosecco, spiced Virginia apple cider, and lemon-infused water. Lush white garden roses, hydrangeas, and Italian ruscus framed the Manor’s curved stone steps as Lian was escorted down the aisle by her father. Under the afternoon sun, Lian and Hun Ki exchanged personal vows and shared their first kiss as husband and wife.
Fireside Cocktails & Golden-Hour Portraits
Following the ceremony, guests transitioned to the Historic Stables terrace for cocktail hour around the outdoor fieldstone firepit and Adirondack lounge seating:
- Custom Signature Drinks: The bar featured two custom recipes: the “Tango Mango” (mango vodka and sweet juice) and the “Cosmo-Leo-Tan” (vodka, cranberry, fresh lime, and orange liqueur).
- Butler-Passed Hors d’Oeuvres: Serendipity Catering circulated hot seasonal bites directly from the commercial kitchen, including petite Maryland lump crab cakes with mango salsa, crispy chicken quesadilla cones, and demitasse shooters of tomato basil soup paired with grilled cheese wedges.
- Newlywed Respite: While guests mingled, Lian and Hun Ki stepped aside for a private tasting plate and warm spiced cider before strolling down the carriage drive with Gabrielle Rose Photo for golden-hour portraits.
Unified Dining in the Historic Stables
At 5:50 PM, guests stepped inside the climate-controlled Historic Stables. Under exposed timber beam trusses and wrought-iron chandeliers, the room was styled with dark oak crossback chairs, ivory table linens, gold-rimmed glassware, and delicate calla lily centerpieces.
At 6:10 PM, the couple made their grand entrance through the timber barn doors straight into their first dance, surrounded by the applause of all 107 seated guests.
Turnkey Plated Dining by Serendipity Catering
Because Great Marsh features a permanent on-site commercial kitchen directly behind the Stables, dinner was prepared fresh à la minute with zero portable kitchen tents, generator noise, or transport reheating:
- Artisan Bread & Salad: Warm herb focaccia with wildflower honey butter, followed by a roasted squash, baby spinach, candied walnut, and goat cheese salad in citrus vinaigrette.
- Plated Main Entrées: Carved center-cut beef tenderloin in shallot demi-glace; grilled salmon fillet in champagne beurre blanc with capers; and wild mushroom ravioli in a creamy reduction.
- The Maid of Honor Scroll: Following parent dances, toasts began—highlighted by the Maid of Honor unfurling a comedic, floor-length parchment scroll that had the entire room laughing.
A Wardrobe Reveal, Late-Night Pizzas & Courtyard Send-Off
At 7:45 PM, following cake cutting and dessert platters, Lian returned in a second look: a dazzling, sequined gold reception gown that kicked off the dance party.
The DJ opened the dance floor for a high-energy mix of pop and funk. At 9:25 PM, personal pan pizzas arrived piping hot at the farm tables, giving guests an immediate late-night comfort bite. The evening concluded at 10:00 PM with a sparkler send-off down the stone courtyard drive.
