When Charlotte and Tyler first toured wedding venues across northern Virginia and the Piedmont region, their primary frustration was the layout of traditional historic mansions. “Almost every estate we visited told us that our 185 guests would have to be split between four separate dining rooms or seated out on a drafty tent over the lawn,” remembers Charlotte. “We wanted true historic architecture, but we refused to sacrifice the feeling of one big, joyous family celebration.”

The moment they walked through the hand-carved oak doors of the Historic Stables at Great Marsh Estate, they knew they had found their home for the weekend. The vaulted ceiling, climate-controlled comfort, and unobstructed view from every guest table meant speeches could be heard clearly, and the energy never dipped.

The day began in total tranquility. Charlotte and her nine bridesmaids arrived at 10:00 AM to take over the second-floor Master Bridal Salon. With four daylight-balanced styling stations and a private balcony overlooking the South Courtyard, their morning was filled with laughter, mimosas, and calm excitement. Downstairs, Tyler and his groomsmen gathered in the first-floor Groom’s Lounge, where a crackling stone fireplace and a game of eight-ball on the slate billiards table kept pre-ceremony nerves at bay. Because both suites have entirely independent exterior exits, the couple was guaranteed to stay hidden until their carefully staged First Look on the manor’s brick portico.

At 5:00 PM, guests took their seats on the South Courtyard lawn. Framed by classical stone balustrades and the rich crimson and amber hues of Virginia’s Blue Ridge foothills, Charlotte and Tyler exchanged personal vows as the autumn sun dipped toward the horizon.

Following vows, guests strolled to the North Courtyard for cocktails and passed appetizers by Serendipity Catering, including Virginia lump crab cakes with remoulade and mini honey-whipped goat cheese crostini. Dinner in the Stables featured a rosemary garlic-crusted tenderloin and wild mushroom risotto, cooked to order directly from the on-site commercial kitchen.

The night concluded under a canopy of stars on the Covered Veranda, where guests enjoyed wood-fired s’mores and a curated Virginia bourbon bar before a sparkler send-off down the grand carriage drive.
