The Wedding Story

The Vision: Cultural Heritage Without Logistical Compromise

When Jessica and Mahtom began planning their wedding, their goal was to weave their respective Jewish and Persian heritages into an unhurried, joyful celebration. Their central requirement was finding a venue with authentic privacy—where 123 guests could transition seamlessly from morning prep to outdoor ancestral rituals and an energetic, single-room dance party without the spatial compromises of mansions divided into small parlors.

With 120 private acres reserved exclusively for their wedding, Great Marsh provided an uninterrupted 14-hour timeline to honor every tradition—from an outdoor Sofreh Aghd and Chuppah ceremony to an authentic Horah and late-night Persian Knife Dance under the Stables rafters.

“We were blending two rich cultures with big traditions, and we refused to split our families across separate dining rooms. Having the entire estate to ourselves gave our ceremony the reverence it deserved, and the Stables kept all 123 of us together for an unforgettable party.”

— Jessica Lambert

Morning Preparations & An Intimate Veranda Vow Reading

The wedding day began at 8:00 AM across private wings of the Georgian Manor House:

  • The Second-Floor Bridal Salon: Natural light filled the styling wing as A&M Beauty Group prepared Jessica and her eight bridesmaids. The bridal party spent a leisurely morning with mimosas and breakfast overlooking the grounds before Jessica stepped into her gown, accented by satin block heels and heirloom jewelry.
  • The Ground-Floor Groom’s Lounge: Downstairs, Mahtom and his groomsmen spent a relaxed morning around the stone hearth and billiards table before dressing in classic black tuxedos.
  • Private Veranda First Look: At 1:55 PM, the couple met on the Manor’s covered veranda terrace. Framed by classical stone columns, Mahtom read personal, handwritten vows to Jessica in private before pre-ceremony portraits began.
  • Guaranteed Separation: Independent exterior access on separate floors ensured the couple spent the entire morning on-site with zero risk of an accidental pre-ceremony run-in.

The Ceremony: Chuppah, Sofreh Aghd & Blue Ridge Vows

At 4:30 PM, 123 guests gathered on the South Courtyard lawn facing panoramic views of the Piedmont foothills. Guests were welcomed on the Manor portico with freshly brewed Persian tea, regional pastries, and chilled lemon-infused water.

The ceremony harmonized Jewish and Persian customs:

  • The Chuppah: A custom birch structure dressed in organic garden florals by The Flower Gal Co. framed the altar.
  • The Sofreh Aghd: Artist Farah curated an elaborate traditional spread featuring a gilded mirror, silver candelabras, decorated eggs and nuts symbolizing fertility, and crystalline rock candy.
  • The Service: Live string ensemble Atoka Strings set the tone. Co-officiated by the bride’s father and groom’s sister, the ceremony featured dual readings in English and Persian, the traditional canopy sugar-rubbing blessing, and the climactic glass break—concluding with shouts of “Mazel Tov!” as the strings played Bruce Springsteen’s “Born To Run.”

Private Parlor Respite & Fireside Cocktails

Immediately following vows, Jessica and Mahtom enjoyed ten minutes of quiet respite in the Manor House parlor while Serendipity Catering delivered a private newlywed tasting plate and custom drinks:

  • Bespoke Craft Cocktails: The Stables patio bar poured “The Rumi” (tequila, fresh lime, and club soda) and “The Bean” (an espresso martini crafted with local cold brew and vanilla oat milk creamer).
  • Butler-Passed Hors d’Oeuvres: Passed bites included braised short ribs on potato crisps, petite Maryland lump crab cakes with mango salsa, shrimp ceviche on plantain chips, and Southern honey-butter chicken biscuits.
  • Grounds Portraits: Photographer Maggie Morris guided the couple along the stone balustrades and tree-lined carriage drive for golden-hour portraits while guests mingled by the outdoor firepit.

Unified Dining in the Historic Stables

At 6:15 PM, guests entered the climate-controlled Historic Stables, greeted by timber trusses draped in fresh greenery, wrought-iron chandeliers, and warm candlelight. Long wooden farm tables and guest rounds were styled with ivory linens, gold-rimmed fine china, and crystal glassware.

At 6:25 PM, the bridal party made a high-energy entrance to Beyoncé and AC/DC, followed by Jessica and Mahtom entering to “Crazy In Love” straight into their first dance to Gary Clark Jr.’s “Our Love.”

Turnkey Plated Dining by Serendipity Catering

Because Great Marsh houses a permanent commercial kitchen directly behind the Stables, dinner was plated fresh à la minute with zero portable kitchen tents or off-site food transport:

  • Artisan Bread & Salad: Warm herb focaccia with whipped wildflower honey butter, followed by a grilled peach, fresh blueberry, and goat cheese salad.
  • Plated Main Entrées: Carved flank steak with chimichurri vinaigrette; grilled mahi mahi topped with lobster sauce and mango salsa; and wild mushroom ravioli in a rich reduction—accompanied by red skin whipped potatoes and lemon asparagus.
  • Toasts & Family Dances: Champagne flowed for speeches from the Maid of Honor and Best Man. Jessica danced with her father to Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing”, and Mahtom shared a moving mother-son dance to Aref’s Persian classic “Soltan-e-Ghalbha.”

The Horah, The Persian Knife Dance & Curbside Scoops

At 8:00 PM, the party erupted into an authentic Horah. Jessica and Mahtom were hoisted high on armchairs as guests danced in concentric circles, taking advantage of a basket of comfortable slippers placed by the dance floor.

At 8:25 PM, the couple gathered for the traditional Persian Knife Dance (Rags-e Chaghoo). Bridesmaids playfully teased Mahtom with the ceremonial cake knife until he met their mock bribes, leading into the cutting of their Serendipity chocolate-vanilla cake.

Outside on the courtyard patio, The Inside Scoop Ice Cream Truck opened its service windows for custom scoops under the stars. With Jessica returning in a one-shoulder white party dress, DJ Craig Wood kept the room packed through the final anthem—Blink-182’s “All The Small Things”—capping an electric night before shuttles departed.
